How to choose a compressor plugin

Answer in brief

Choose by the job you do most often, then check four things: a mix knob, a sidechain filter, a clear gain-reduction meter and a trial you can run on your own tracks.

Start with what your DAW already has

Every major DAW ships with a capable compressor. Learn it on a vocal and a drum loop first. Once you can say what it fails to do, such as staying smooth on a loud singer or adding grit to drums, you know what to look for in a second one.

Features worth paying attention to

  • A mix or dry/wet knob, so parallel compression needs no extra routing.
  • A sidechain high-pass filter, so kick and bass do not make the whole mix pump.
  • A gain-reduction meter you can read at a glance while the track plays.
  • Several styles or a clear character of its own, rather than many controls that all sound alike.
  • A demo or trial, because a compressor is only judged on your own material.

Pick by the sound you need

If you want the sound of a famous hardware unit, choose a model of that unit, such as the Universal Audio 1176 Classic Limiter Collection. If you want one compressor for most jobs, a multi-style compressor like FabFilter Pro-C 3 covers a lot of ground. If no compressor you try has the movement you hear in your head, describing it to Studio 56 builds one around that sound.

Run the same test on every candidate

  • Use one vocal, one drum loop and one bass line for every compressor.
  • Aim for about the same gain reduction on each, around 3 to 6 dB.
  • Match the output level by ear or with a meter.
  • Listen for what happens to the start of each note and to the room or tail after it.

Questions and answers

Is a paid compressor better than a free one?

Not by default. Free compressors such as TDR Kotelnikov and MCompressor do the core job well. Paid ones usually add styles, modeled hardware character or a faster workflow.
